The Wee One is One!

I know it is a little late but… Mina is one!!! (Ok 14 months now but whatever.) We had a small party to celebrate and unkie Simon and auntie Chrissy came to visit for the week.

We did plenty of sight seeing while they where here; we visited the Winchester Mystery House, Big Basin (the redwoods), Santa Cruz, Hwy 1, San Francisco and Alcatraz.

For Mina’s birthday we visited Gary at work for lunch at Cafe Macs and the next day we took her to the Children’s Discovery Museum.

That Morning Mina got her gifts from Mommy and Daddy, her first trike (a jet trike at that) and from Grandma a Sweet Pea which she loves to carry around and dance to.  That evening we had a few people by for cake and ice cream. We made vegan chocolate cake since some of our friends are vegetarian. and allergic to eggs. It was actually really good! We managed to get he kids to wear party hats and got plenty of good pictures.

As far as first year milestones go she started walking a week before her birthday (and hasn’t stopped walking, running, dancing or climbing) and her first two teeth arrived in August and her next two just arrived this month.

The BEST chocolate cake ever…that happens to be VEGAN. I kid you not! (and they aren’t kidding; we now use this recipe whenever we make chocolate cake)

1 1/4 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup warm water
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp distilled white or apple cider vinegar

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In an 8X8 square pan/dish, mix together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and salt with a fork, making sure it is really blended together. Add the water, vanilla, oil, and vinegar, and again, mix together so that it’s really blended together. Use a spatula to scrape down the sides if necessary.

Place in oven and bake for about 30 minutes, or until a knife comes out clean. Cool on a rack completely (2 hours).

Not so baby anymore.

The wee girl is getting big on us. She is not so much a baby anymore as she is a toddler.

Teeth: Mina’s first tooth started coming through finally on August 11. She liked to chew before but now she really likes to chew, well more like bit. That little tooth of hers is mighty sharp especially when she is trying it out on your hand.

Walking: Crawling is not longer good enough, Mina much prefers to walk (with help). Be it holding mommy or daddy’s hand, holding on to furniture or pushing something it is the best way to travel.

Discoveries: Mina is learning something new everyday, for better or worse. She has figured out that she can put objects back into containers but also has nearly figured out how to flush the toilet. She is waving “hello” and “good bye” and pulling everything out of the cupboards. Now that she can close doors we have to keep an eye on Sebastien’s bathroom (the one with his litter box in it) as she likes to shut that door effectively kicking the poor cat out. It is fun watching what she will do next.

It took me a bit but I finally around to updating.

Our little baby is fast turning into a toddler. Crawling, attempts to walk, talking and exploring/getting into everything is the norm. Mina is changing every day and learning new thing all the time. I’ll list out some of our recent highlights.

Trips: Most notably Mina and I flew home for a visit in June for a week. We would have stayed longer by since Gary couldn’t join us we didn’t want to be away from daddy too long. A week was about as ling as Mina could handle. More on our trip in another post.
We also joined Gary and his team for an “off-site”, spent in Santa Cruz. While Gary minded Mina I had the opportunity to take surf lessons with some of Gary’s coworkers. It was amazing!!! I definitely want to go surfing again. It was nice to met the people Gary works with.

Crawling: Mina started to properly crawl just before we left for Canada and can’t be stopped. She has always been a go-baby and now that she can go on her own she is loving it. She is also pulling herself up to standing at every opportunity and tries to walk whenever she can. Needless to say this means she is getting into everything.

Talking: Mina going to be a talker (if there was ever any doubt with the family she comes from). She is already speaking two languages besides English. She speaks Persian; baba, meaning baby food and German; nein, meaning no. Remarkably she typically uses the words correctly. Mina also says mama and dada.

Swimming: We are lucky enough to have a nice pool in our complex so Mina and I have been taking advantage of that since it has gotten warm (and apparently will get hotter yet). Mina likes to swim!

Colds: After returning from Canada Mina caught her first cold (as did I). Thankfully she got over it pretty fast and is felling better now.

Yoga: Sadly we had our last Mom and Baby Yoga class just before Memorial Day. Now that Mina is crawling we will be going to the Mama and Movers Playgroup instead. We just need to wait for the next session to start.

Dancing: Mina loves to dance and music in general. She has started to really enjoy Yo Gabba Gabba! especially DJ Lance Rock. She also likes her toy piano and playing guitar with daddy.

That’s enough for now. More posts to come.

A 26lb update

Mina is sitting by herself with out support now. She is enjoying being able to look around her better. She really likes people/baby watching at the park and yoga.

She isn’t crawling forward yet but is can go backwards when she wants to. She can definitely get around when she trys. She no longer stays where I put her when I set her down. She is wanting to get into everything. She is gearing up for being quite the little terror when she get how to go forward.

New Activities
We picked out some new toys for her, a big ball, some little balls and a piano. They are quickly becoming favourites. We also picked out a floating ring with a canopy and built in seat for use in the pool. Yes, we have been in the outdoor pool already (mom’s got the sunburn to prove it.) The was water a little chilly but Mina didn’t seem mind. We have also had our first play time in Campbell Park and Mina has hit the swings a few times now. We are looking at getting a PeaPod to use in the park, at the pool, generaly when we are out and about as well as when we come home for a visit. It will be nice to have a portable safe place for her to sleep/play.

Mina had her first visit to the paediatrician today (family doctors won’t typicaly see small children here.)
She is developing well, she is right where she should be. She has grown to 27″ tall. When the nurse first weighted her she was 26lb 6oz(?!)
I asked her if she was sure and she was, I asked her if it was normal for a child to gain 10lbs in 3 months she told me “that was a question for the doctor”. The doctor on the other hand told me if she weighed that much (at her hight) she’d have a big round body with a itty bitty head on top. He had her re-weighed. (16lbs 8oz)
The doctor is really nice with a great sense of humour and is easy going. Mina liked his toy covered stethoscope.

Sippy cup

Mina is learning to use her sippy cup. She has used it a few times now and is getting the hang of holding it and tilting it to get the juice to the right end. She is also figuring out how to suck on it since this cup has a flow regulator in it. (Nice ’cause it doesn’t leak when she turns it upside down.)

Our visit to Starbucks are more interesting for her now that she can have mango juice.

She has been eating solid food for a little while and is ready for stage 2, thicker food. (Still wanting/getting plenty of breast milk.)

Mina is now using the full sized stroller. She still fits in her car seat but is much happier in the big seat. She especially likes when she can put her feet up on the bar and stick her toes in the air. This stroller also provides better shade which is good since it can get very sunny here. I also appreciate being able to strap her toys to the stroller so she can’t trow them away. This is also good practice for when we fly to Ontario in June; we’ll be using an umbrella stroller instead of trying to bring this one along.

So Mina rolled over. This isn’t the first time, but the first on film.

(Note the large diaper bum; she is back in cloth diapers and they take up a lot more room. I didn’t like the diaper service here, they use pre-fold diapers and I have been spoiled with fitted diapers. I oped to buy fitted diapers in Canada, bring them along and wash them myself. I chose Mother-ease one size diapers. They do make her bum bigger, she needs the next size up in sleepers now to accommodate her longer torso. At least the rest of her cloths fit over them.)

First Bottle

First bottle

Grandma came over today so we could do some canning. While we were boiling water I took the opportunity to sterilized  the pump and try it out. When Gary was home for lunch and Mina got fussy we decided to try giving her the bottle and see what happens.

She ended up taking her first bottle.

She considered taking it from daddy but I think mom was too close by so she didn’t. Grandma gave it a try next with mom and dad out of the room and she decided the bottle wasn’t such a bad thing. Next up, see if she will take it from daddy.

Not that she will get a bottle all the time but it is nice to know that the option is there.

Learning to use a suck

We had our usual midwife visit this morning. Unfortunately  Gary couldn’t make it since he had to be in Listowel today. Luckily Grandma was able to take us. (I would have walked but that may have resulted in a scolding, or with the way the weather has been, rained on.)

Just like Simon.
She has more then just a resemblance to her dear uncle. At her weigh in (after making quite the mess for Shirley,) she came in at 7lb 11oz. That’s right, she gained a pound in the last week. (Nikki asked if I has cream in there.) The midwives are very happy and impressed. Grandma wasn’t surprised since Simon did the same thing when he was born.

Bottles and Pacifiers
We asked about bottles and pacifiers today. Since she is past her birth weight and definitely  not having a problem eating, they didn’t think there was a problem with her trying them. They did recommend Grandma introduce the bottle as I can’t, and the fuss will likely break Gary’s heart. So it looks like we will be looking at breast pumps and bottles this weekend as well as filling out a registry and picking out something for our nephew West. (His birthday was yesterday! xoxox)

Grandma had already bought Mina a pacifier so when we got home I boiled them and gave it a try. She didn’t know what to make of them at first, but she is slowly figuring it out. Right now it is working best when she is half asleep and fussing.
